Heart of The Ville Walking Tour

2 Hours

$20 Per Guest

The Ville neighborhood was historically 1.5 square miles of dense urban fabric, an African American community bound by racial restrictive covenants that perfected self-reliance. Within those 1.5 square miles the Black St. Louis community nurtured some of its greatest institutions and notable figures such as Homer G. Phillips Hospital, Annie Malone’s Poro College, Chuck Berry and Tina Turner to name a few. The Heart of The Ville walking tour explores the vestiges of this self-sustained and thriving urban fabric in parallel with review of contemporary grassroots efforts to preserve, restore and transform the community.

The tour route consists of a 2-mile walk that visits the site of key institutions from the neighborhood and is overlaid with oral histories and documented stories about instrumental events and people from the community.
