The Story of Black Education

Paralleling the struggle for emancipation and citizenship, the St. Louis Black community saw access to education as a means to freedom and economic mobility. The monument of this perspective is the continued organizing and resistance of Black leaders through the 19th and 20th centuries to establish equal academic footing with their white counterparts. The Story of Black Education tour narrates the journey towards education freedom, visiting sites of significance to the Black education struggle in St. Louis from its beginnings in 1821 to present times. We explore both traditional and alternative efforts toward Black literacy and education liberation.
